Historic fort where Shivaji Maharaj defeated Afzal Khan in the legendary battle of 1659. The fort is built in a twin-structure format with an upper fort (Balekilla) and lower fort (Maachi). The famous Bhavani Temple houses the sword gifted by Goddess Bhavani to Shivaji Maharaj. The fort offers breathtaking views of the Konkan region and surrounding valleys. The tomb of Afzal Khan is located at the base village. This fort is strategically located on a spur between the Nira and Koyna rivers.

How to Reach

Located 24 km from Mahabaleshwar on Satara Road. Well connected by road from Pune (110 km) and Mumbai (250 km). MSRTC buses available from Satara and Mahabaleshwar. Private taxis recommended.
